Research fellow in plant metabolomics (Cod. 014_QAA_MQBC)

Pubblicato il 13 ottobre 2008

The Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) was established in 2007 jointly by the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Agricultural Institute at San Michele all’Adige (IASMA). FEM will carry forward and expand the mission of IASMA (established in 1874) of sustaining Trentino’s land-based economy through experimentation, education and technological transfer (advisory service). Additionally, the FEM is now establishing a Research and Innovation Centre that aims at playing an international leading role in research and innovation in three main research areas:

A1)    Genomics and Molecular Breeding of Fruit Crops. A structural and translational genomics approach leading to the genetic improvement of fruit crops (apple, grapevine, soft fruit and strawberry). The programme will capitalise the sequencing at IASMA of the grapevine (cv Pinot noir) genome in 2007 and the sequencing of apple (cv Golden delicious) genome expeceted for 2008.

A2)    Food Quality and Natural Products Biotechnologies. Metabolic profiling-based programme linking chemical phenotyping to genotyping of wildtype fruit and breeding populations. Characterization of fruit/derived microelements and bioactive compounds and their health impact at the molecular level and through a nutritional genomics approach..

A3)    Biodiversity and Biocomplexity of Alpine and Mountain Ecosystems.
Multidisciplinary and integrated studies of complex ecosystem interactions in the face of evolving antropic pressure and climate change. Ecological genomics and molecular evolution approaches to define the genetic bases of ecosystems resilience and sustainability.

The Centre will be equipped from the start with state of the art facilities in genomics, metabolomics, natural product biotechnology, and all the facilities needed to provide an  unique environment for innovative research in fruit crops, agrifood and ecosystems It will comprise approximately 300 staff with over 2000m2 laboratories (including a residential facility with top quality laboratories at 1400 m for alpine ecological research) and over 30 ha of experimental fields. The Centre also hosts an international PhD School on Fruit Plant Molecular Physiology in collaboration with leading Italian and international Universities.

As part of this strategic drive, the Foundation is setting up a metabolomics facility. The laboratory is already equipped with gas chromatography-mass spectrometers (GC-TOF/MS and GC-MS/MS), ultrahigh-speed liquid chromatography-mass spectrometers (UPLC_Q-TOF/MS and UPLC MS/MS), high-resolution (FTMS) spectrometer will be available in 2009, and already comprises seven full time researchers and technicians.
